Descartes ââ¬ÅI Think Therefor I Amââ¬Â Essay
-A statement by the seventeenth-century French philosopher Renà © Descartes ââ¬Å"I think; therefore I amâ⬠was the end of the search Descartes conducted for a statement that could not be doubted. In the beginning, Descartes was in the process of figuring out his nature, using reasoning instead of experience. He had to start with a first premise which was indubitable. He found that ââ¬Å"I existâ⬠is something that is certain, and what follows must be certain as well. In the meditatorââ¬â¢s search for certainty, he had to discard anything that was false or even open to the slightest doubt. He had to tear away all that was previously known to him, and with a new, stronger foundation, start anew. Descartes had conceded that he has no senses and no body. He also noted that the physical world does not exist, which might also seem to imply his nonexistence. Yet, to have these doubts, he must exist. He found that he could not doubt that he himself existed, as he was the one doing the doubting in the first place. For an evil demon to mislead him in all these insidious ways, he must exist in order to be misled. There must be an ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠that can doubt, be deceived, and so on. He then formulates the famous cogito argument, saying that he concludes the ââ¬Å"proposition I am, I exist is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind.â⬠He then questions what the ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠that exists is. He first thought that he had a soul, by means of which he was nourished, moved, could sense and think; and also that he had a body. All these attributes can be doubted, except the fact that he thinks. He can exist if any of the other attributes are not there, but cannot exist if he does not think. Further, he states that he exists as long as he is thinking. The meditator then concludes that in the strict sense, he is only a thing that thinks. In this statement, the Meditator finds his first grip on certainty after the radical skepticism he posited in the first meditation.

Handout Research Methods in Applied Linguistics Essay
How did the UK population talk about Mexico between 1970ââ¬â¢s and 1993? Corpus analysis of the word ââ¬ËMexicoââ¬â¢ in the BNC, also with the word ââ¬ËMexicanââ¬â¢ as they are directly related. For this assignment I will use the BNC (found 1531 tokens for ââ¬ËMexicoââ¬â¢ and 680 for ââ¬ËMexicanââ¬â¢), where I will analyse how the UK talked about Mexico between the 1970ââ¬â¢s and 1993. My major area of study is business, and I am interested in finding out how discourse analysis using corpora can be used in Marketing, but particularly in the marketing of Mexico in the UK. The UK is currently in 3rd place, following the United States of America and Canada, of the number of visitors (by air) to Mexico. However, the number of visitors from the UK is only 6% of the number of visitors from the United States of America. The Mexican government is concerned that the image of Mexico overseas is not being marketed well. After reading statements from the president of Mexico and articles about the new strategies to promote tourism to Mexico in the UK, there seem to be two main reasons why the tourism from the UK in Mexico has not grown: 1) the media have made people believe that the security situation in Mexico is worse than it actually is and 2) the distance and the costs of travelling to Mexico are too high. Looking at the statistics from 2008 to date, the number of visitors has not changed dramatically so I wonder if perhaps is not the distance and is not the way Mexico is marketed in the UK currently, but the way Britons have had Mexico portrayed to them throughout their lives (if we talk about the adults of today and the generation before them). So, with this research, I aim to find out if the image of Mexico that we are shown in the Media today in Britain is something new or if it is the image that has been present in the UK since the 1970ââ¬â¢s. This type of analysis, and perhaps in a bigger scale, could be used to promote and market Mexico in the UK as it would show how people talk about the country and this will give the government a real idea of what needs to be changed and how they can create better marketing with the purpose of increasing the number of visitors from the UK in Mexico and potentially from other countries in Europe. Policies and procedures to promote positive behaviour Essay
Prepare and deliver a presentation for the induction of new support workers on promoting positive behaviour in the school. Policies and procedures to promote positive behaviour TGAââ¬â¢s behaviour policies include: Golden Rules which are on the website and on display in all classrooms, the Behaviour and anti bullying policies. We also have certain procedures to support and encourage positive behaviour, these are: Golden Time ââ¬â à ½ hour Friday afternoon Praise from adults (smiley faces, stickers etc.) Positive contact with parents (a postcard or phone call home) ââ¬Å"Vivoâ⬠tokens, trophy and/or cash prize Individual treat (given time on favourite activity, etc.) Group treat (to be given use of special resource, to line up first etc.) à Class treat (few minutes extra play, time on chosen activity, class celebration) Additional class reward schemes are at the discretion of the class teacher We have a clear procedure for dealing with issues which staff follow. There are several steps beginning with a verbal warning and escalating steps by step. At each stage the child is reminded that their behaviour is a choice and given the opportunity to change it. By using these methods the children know the expectations, boundaries and sanctions. They are rewarded for positive behaviour. The children have a say in setting the rules. They are expected to listen to others to learn about the impact of their behaviour. Children know the expected results of their choice of behaviour, i.e. good choices equal rewards and poor choices equal sanctions. Children will naturally try to push boundaries, in order to feel safe and secure, they need to know what the limits are. Consistency is key, so that the children are not confused, they know the boundaries and respect them as they know they will be enforced. Consistency will also stop situations where the children insist ââ¬ËWell Mrs X lets us do itââ¬â¢. Promoting positive behaviour ââ¬â not only is it much nicer to deal with positive behaviour, but studies have shown that it is effective and the good behaviour will be repeated. Rewarding negative behaviour with attention is counterproductive and does not add to a childââ¬â¢s emotional well-being. Itââ¬â¢s the schoolââ¬â¢s job not only to educate in the classroom but to take a holistic approach to and turn out well round, productive members of society. If we want to be treated withà respect, we must show respect to others and set a positive example. Managing inappropriate behaviour ââ¬â knowing when to seek assistance and from whom is very important. If you feel that you canââ¬â¢t manage a situation, get assistance. This could be if a child is ignoring repeated, calm instruction or behaving unpredictably. If there is a danger, to children, self or staff, get help, eg if a child is becoming violent or threatening violence or if a child is trying to do something that may result in harm (leave school grounds, using equipment in a dangerous manner). Obviously not all behaviour that requires intervention will be that dramatic, sometimes it may be necessary to involve the class teacher or senior leadership for other matters, such as the destruction of property (defacing equipment, tearing books, etc), especially if itââ¬â¢s a recurring problem and any kind of violence, racism or homophobia. If a certain type of behaviour is persistent, refer it to the SENCO or the class teacher ââ¬â minor but persistent rudeness, inability to pay attention, trouble getting on with classmates, etc. All inappropriate behaviour must be recorded on SIMS so that it can be monitored and interventions can be put in place if necessary.

The Influence of OBAOR Strategy in the GCC Countries Thesis Proposal
The Influence of OBAOR Strategy in the GCC Countries - Thesis Proposal Example This essay analyzes that UAE is considered as one of the advancing economies globally in a list that has India and China. While UAE enjoys close ties with nations such as the EU and the U.S. the nationââ¬â¢s still maintain close trade ties with Iran and other nations in the Middle East. It is known that the Western nations have placed trade sanctions on some nations that are considered to have violated human rights as well as being led by authoritarian administrations. It is from this context that it remains to be seen how the U.S. and the EU will precede in terms of the trade relations with UAE and other nations in the Gulf Region. The decision by GCC nations to form a regional economic block and by extension a free trade area is seen as one of the greatest step by the nations in the region. It is also significant Middle East states to take control of international trade, not just in the region but other regions such as Europe and Southern parts of the world. However, the strateg ies put in place can be said to be working as trade activities appear to be on the rise in the said regions. It is often assumed that the formation of trading blocs is aimed at creating some form of monopoly, particularly when the nations involved have some common characteristics. GCC nations are primarily oil producing countries. It can, therefore, be argued that the major motivation of the GCC was to try and monopolize oil prices and by extension the oil industry. Despite the numerous challenges, the general economic prospects in this region remain positive.

County analysis - Essay Example In carrying out business with parties from elevated power distance countries, the managers used or should have title at least on the same level as those they are negotiating with. On the other hand, cultures that have low power distance should have the inequalities reduced. Japan is ranked at 54 while the United States of America is ranked at 45. According to Hofstede, countries with low uncertainty avoidance index score have innovative approaches and risk investment tendencies. This are attributes found in entrepreneurs. Uncertainty avoidance is the reality that vagueness about the prospects of the future is a basic fact of human life with which we try to cope through the domain of technology, law and religion. Uncertainty avoidance is also the extent to which individuals feel endangered by situations. This leads to people creating institutions that deal with these. Hofstede used stress, employment stability and rule orientation to identify. Countries are then ranked as low or high concerning uncertainty avoidance. Squat uncertainty avoidance means that, there is a strong willingness to take a risk. On the other hand, high uncertainty implies a lower willingness to take risk. Hofstedes notes that, in societies where there is high uncertain avoidance, there tends to be a generational gap amid the old and the young. High unce rtain avoidance cultures are concerned with rituals and traditions and often follow exceedingly complex rules and regulations. Individualism refers to preference of closed surrounding environment, in which it is understood that, one must mind for themselves and their close relations as opposed to the entire cluster in which one is an associate. Individualism can be referred to as an appraisal of the emotional dependence and autonomy of a person. The culture of a country is scored high in this sense if there are favourable responses to items such as , having a satisfying job which leaves you with enough time for yourself and the family. In

Managing Organisation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Managing Organisation - Essay Example With this, they have generated difficulties to great performance for one and more reasons (Cox 2001, pg4). First, they have minimised the effectiveness of communication and thus increasing the disagreement among workers. This is due to the difference of the races of the people, in the workplace. They also go through low level of social desirability and display lower levels of commitment to the group, including increasing the cost of the organisation due to the discrimination that do exists in the workplaces. Other challenges include things like opposition to change as some of the group of individual may not wish to accept the idea that the workplace strategies have to be changed. These can also being in difficulty in the implementation of diversity at the place of work policies. These challenges can as well be an advantage to the organisation in such a away that the improve on the way the organisation solve their problems, they also increase the level of the originality and innovation of the workers within the organisation as they come across different people with different ideas thus influencing one another (Cox 2001,pg5). Other than that, the situations also increase the excellence of employees through better employment and maintenance of the worker. There is also variety of viewpoint as well as there will be increased effective execution of their tasks in the organisation. Question Two To establish good and workable principles and rules at any workplaces, one has to come up with the rules that imitate the essential information of a good management. With this, each of the branch managers in the organisation has to define the rules at the station by their own name according to the business requirement in the section of the organisation. This is the most practical way to implement the rules by the managers at the workplaces as the rule will be practical to every section at the organisation depending on their type of the work or responsibility that they are expected to undertake to facilitate the growth of the organisation as a whole. Question Three For any organisation to be able to deliver quality products to the customers, they have to adopt a culture that they can be using to ensure that they meet the requirement of their client (Waller 1998). The organisation have to design and execute organisation arrangement that is optimized, this is usually done by dividing the quality organisation into two self-determining bodies and highlighted empowerment and responsibility in their sections. These involve the quality system and the quality engineering, from which the management assess the quality of the product fully before releasing it out to the customers. For this to be more effective in an organisation, they have to ensure that the entire product to be delivered to the customer it is inspected by the system to certify that the product is of good quality as expected. Description - Essay Example Hemoglobin, found in the red blood cells has the primary function of transporting oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and then transporting CO2 from the tissues back to the lungs. Deoxyhemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin that has a higher affinity form CO2. CO2 to hemoglobin and forms carbaminohemoglobin molecule. The process is reversible thus when it reaches the lungs, the CO2 dissociates freely from the hemoglobin and expelled from the body. This mechanism accounts for about ten percent of the CO2. CO2 diffuses into red blood cells where Carbonic anhydrase in the RBC quickly converts the CO2 into carbonic acid that is an unstable molecule.CA dissociates fast into bicarbonates ions and hydrogen ions which bind to hemoglobin. The bicarbonate ions formed is transported out of the RBC into the blood liquid component in exchange for a chloride ion. Upon the blood reaching the lungs, the bicarbonate ion is transported back into the RBC in exchange for chloride ion. The hydrogen ions dissociate from the hemoglobin and binds to the bicarbonate ion, producing carbonic acid, that through the enzymatic action of CA is converted back into CO2. The CO2 produced is expelled through exhalation by the
